LIGHT AND MEDICINE

Light is in principle the oldest and most important food of the world. Plants use it in the most simplest and direct way: With the help or their leaf pigment cholorophyll they developed a procedure in order to produce sugar from carbon dioxide of air and water using light.
Animals and humans however have a metabolism which is not based on chlorophyll, but on haemoglobin. They therefore cannot convert light to food by photosynthesis, but have to nourish themselves by eating plants or animals. They are thus rather parasites of the plant world, which could exist without us – we however not without them.

Since life evolved under the influence of sunlight, it is not surprising that many animals, including man, have developed a variety of physiological responses to radiation. Skin-tanning and the subcutaneous synthesis of vitamin D from its precursors are only the best known consequences of exposure to sunlight.

Do humans use photo-synthesis as well? The answer is yes! More and more important light receptors are discovered in human bodies and within the body’s cell, the mitochondria and also the DNA have important receptors and we are beginning to understand more and the activity of laser light on cellular functions.
Only 10% of our DNA is being used for building proteins. The other 90% are considered “junk DNA”.
Now many scientist – especially in Russia – are exploring these 90% and studies show that the DNA is also most deeply involved into the bio photon radiation.

Light therapy has been introduced as the standard method of treatment for neonatal jaundice, a sometimes fatal disease that is common among premature infants. Since then, many therapeutic uses for light have been found.
